Cima Ovest di Lavaredo – North Face – Cassin Ratti (VI+A0 or VIII)
The climbing route on the north face of the Cima Ovest (German ‘Westliche Zinne’) stands as one of the great extreme classics on the Tre Cime di Lavaredo.
Prior to Riccardo Cassin and Vittorio Ratti’s successful ascent in 1935, 27 different rope teams had attempted the climb without success. The crux of the route involves a highly exposed traverse to the left, presenting the most challenging climbing difficulties (VI+A0 or VIII).
Mastering these pitches requires not only technical ability, but also a strong mental attitude on the part of the first and second climber. Due to the great challenges and the difficulty of the retreat after the traverse, the mountain guides of the Dreizinnen Alpine School strongly recommend an introductory tour to assess the climbing abilities of the guests.
