Ice Climbing in the Dolomites
For enthusiasts of alpine and sport climbing, the Dolomites present a wonderful opportunity even in winter. Numerous frozen waterfalls quicken climbers’ hearts, and the mountain guides at the Tre Cime Alpine School are intimately familiar with the various icefalls in South Tyrol and Dolomiti di Cadore. The ice climbing routes’ difficulty levels and lengths can be tailored to individual experience and proficiency, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
The best areas in the Dolomites include:
Valle di Braies: The Rosslahne ice climbing crag offers exciting climbing lines ranging from WI2 to WI6. The valley also features moderate multi-pitch routes such as the ‘Zettenbock’ and challenging combined routes such as the ‘Goasbort’ (goat’s beard).
Val Travenanzes: A 250-meter-high boulder covered by numerous demanding ice lines, with the upper area known as Canadian Dream.
Alta Badia / Sella Group: Around Alta Badia in Val Badia, thrilling ice lines like ‘The Sword of Damocles,’ ‘Lajunta,’ and the picturesque ‘Cassiopeia’ icefall await.
Langental: In this side valley of Val Gardena, numerous challenging ice lines form each winter. The standout classic is most likely ‘Dlacion di Droc,’ a 350-meter waterfall with an entry column rated WI5+.
